Tonight persistance would pay off in a big way. After a fantastic night filled with several spectacular auroral substorms the early light of an approaching dawn was beginning to show its influance on the aurora.
This would be the second time in my many years observing the northern lights that I would be treated to the very rare visually vivid blue/purple aurora. So rare is it that I have only found one written reference to a blue aurora that was seen by the late Karl Stormer of Norway, a pioneer in the early study of aurora, back in the 1920s!
I used a home-built medium-format camera equipped with a 38mm wide-angle lens and Kodak E100G film to record the moment
